What is OCD?
Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) features repetitive behaviors (compulsions) arising due to a pattern of unwanted thoughts and fears (obsessions). Daily activities are affected by these obsessions and compulsions which causes significant distress.
One may try to ignore or stop the obsessions, but that only increases the distress and anxiety. Ultimately, the person feels driven to perform compulsive acts to try and ease the stress. Bothersome thoughts or urges keep coming back despite efforts to ignore or get rid of them. This leads to more ritualistic / obsessive behavior – the vicious cycle of OCD.
OCD revolves around certain themes e.g. excessive fear of getting contaminated by germs. To ease contamination fears, one may compulsively wash their hands until they’re sore and chapped.
Symptoms
- Fear of contamination or contaminating others
- Fear of losing control
- Desperately avoiding trigger situations.
- Repeatedly checking things like doors, switches & locks.
- Excessive washing and cleaning of self and objects.
- Excessive attention on superstitious thoughts or luck.
- Repeatedly performing a particular task for a certain number of times.
- Arranging things in a specific way.
- Having intrusive, unwanted thoughts and images of sexual and violent nature.
- Excessively engaging in rituals or praying repeatedly.
Treatment Options At Emoneeds
The obsessions and compulsions are typically treated with medication, psychotherapy, or a combination of both. Mental health professionals typically recommend therapy as part of a combined approach to treatment, in adjunct to the medical treatment. Medication can often help relieve symptoms, but by working with a psychotherapist, you can also learn:
- Tools to manage unwanted thoughts and change unhelpful patterns of thinking and behavior.
- Strategies to improve relaxation and cope with emotional distress.
Community prevalence estimates of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) in adults range from 0.5% to 3%. While OCD can be lifelong, the prognosis is better in children and young adults. Among these individuals, 40% recover entirely by adulthood. Some people with OCD have a marked improvement in symptoms with therapy and treatment, whereas, 4 out 5 people remain untreated and their illness can be lifelong too
