Family Therapy

What is Family Therapy?

Family therapy can be designed as any psychotherapeutic endeavor that explicitly focuses on altering the interactions between or among family members and seeks to improve the functioning of the family as a unit. It aims at some change in relational functioning, typically in the functioning of some special individuals in the family. It is meant to heal a rift between their parents and adult children.

Family therapy consists of psychological counseling by a psychologist, clinical social worker or licensed therapist that aims to help family members improve communication and resolve conflicts.

Treatment plan depends on the family’s situation. The length of the treatment depends both on the nature of the problem and on the therapeutic model. It may include all family members or just those able or willing to participate. Family therapy sessions teach skills to deepen family connections and get through stressful times.

How it works

Several family members are brought together for therapy sessions in family therapy. However, a family therapist can also be individually consulted by a family member.

Sessions usually take about 50 minutes to an hour. Family therapy is often short term – generally about 12 sessions or so. However, the number of sessions needed and how often you need to meet depends on the particular family’s situation and varies from family to family.

During family therapy, you can:

Examine your family’s ability to solve problems and express thoughts and emotions in a productive manner

Explore family roles, rules and behavior patterns to identify issues that contribute to conflict – and ways to work through these issues

Identify your family’s strengths, such as caring for one another, and weaknesses, such as difficulty confiding in one another

You and your family members will be able to understand one another better, family therapy can also provide skills to cope with challenging situations in a more effective way. A sense of togetherness in the family can also be achieved.
